Remain the Same: MOTAS
S2A is pleased to announce the solo exhibition by the artist duo MOTAS, based in Japan. MOTAS is an art unit of two artists, BOYA, a former graffiti artist, and TOMO, who has worked on stop-motion film projects. They initially gained attention from the public and the art world through their mural work and continue to work across various genres, including performance and painting.
Their artwork, inspired by underground and punk culture, iconography, traditional Japanese tattoos, animation, and techno-pop music, showcases a unique blend of graphic design, typography, illustration, and abstract painting. Through their sensory and experimental style, they have built a distinctive artistic universe. Moreover, MOTAS's works feature characters such as 'BLEYE' and 'OOOS,' which drive the narrative. These characters, which are motifs of fingers, expand the artist's world, evoke empathy, and stimulate the imagination of viewers. BLEYE, which has appeared since their early work, embodies the idea that 'No matter what happens, tomorrow will come, and we will continue living while carrying something on our shoulders'. Over the years, these characters have evolved into increasingly vivid entities. Their world now extends beyond painting to include murals, brand collaborations, and products, sharing their artistic vision through various projects and exhibitions.
In this exhibition, MOTAS will present over 40 paintings, and performance works that explore unchanging values and happiness in everyday life through their warm perspective and sensibility. We invite you to this exhibition to rediscover the joys of daily life.
